Yes, you can upgrade GTA 6 from the Standard Edition to the Ultimate Edition after release. Rockstar has confirmed the upgrade, and it costs the $20 difference between the $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate prices in the US. The upgrade is bought as a digital add-on from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, so it works whether you started with a digital or boxed copy.
Upgrade: quick facts
- Is it possible? Yes, confirmed by Rockstar
- Cost: $20 in the US (regional prices vary)
- When: after you own the Standard Edition, including after launch
- Where: PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, as a digital purchase
- What it adds: Ultimate vehicles, weapons, shops, locations and apparel
- Last checked: November 6, 2026
Why upgrade later instead of buying Ultimate now?
Because it removes the guesswork. The Standard Edition includes the complete game, and you can find out how much you care about the extra content once you are playing. If you love collecting cars and customising Jason and Lucia, upgrade. If not, you have saved $20. Our Standard vs Ultimate guide explains the decision in detail.
How to upgrade on PS5
Rockstar and Sony have not published the exact store listing name yet, so the steps below follow how PlayStation edition upgrades normally work. Expect them to be very similar once the upgrade goes live.
- Highlight Grand Theft Auto VI on your PS5 home screen or in your Game Library.
- Open the game hub and look for the add-ons or View Product section, or open the PlayStation Store and search for the game.
- Find the Ultimate Edition upgrade item. Check that the price is the upgrade price, not the full $99.99 game.
- Select Buy and confirm payment.
- Let the add-on download and install, then restart the game.
How to upgrade on Xbox Series X|S
- Go to My games & apps and highlight GTA 6.
- Press the Menu button and choose Manage game and add-ons, or open the game’s page in the Store.
- Find the Ultimate Edition upgrade and confirm it shows the upgrade price.
- Select Buy and complete payment.
- Install the add-on and restart the game.
Important: do not buy the full Ultimate Edition by mistake
On launch day, store pages will show the full Standard Edition, the full Ultimate Edition and the upgrade item. If you already own Standard, buy only the upgrade. Buying the full Ultimate Edition would mean paying for the game twice. If it happens, contact PlayStation or Xbox support quickly; refunds are generally only possible if you have not started downloading the duplicate purchase.
What the upgrade unlocks
- Vehicles: ’95 Grotti Cheetah, Vapid Ganado low-rider, Shitzu Squalo boat, ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy, Dinka Enduro motorcycle, Crest kayak and a Classic Car Collection.
- Weapons: Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers and personalised Girardi ES9 and Klose K17 pistols.
- Shops: Rideout Customs, One-Eyed Willie’s, Sara’s Unisex Salon, Stock 305, Electric Fang Tattoo.
- Locations: Paradise Garage in Watson Bay and the PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store compound.
- Style: exclusive outfits, tattoos and Goodtime Gear clothing.
Rockstar says the content is threaded through Jason and Lucia’s story, so if you upgrade early in the game some items will unlock later as you progress. If you upgrade after finishing the story, expect most of them to be available straight away, although we will confirm how this works after launch. Full list: GTA 6 Ultimate Edition contents.
Does upgrading affect your save?
Rockstar has not detailed this, but edition upgrades in modern games almost always add content to your existing save rather than starting a new one. Your progress should carry on as normal. We will update this guide if Rockstar says otherwise.
Upgrading a boxed copy
If you bought the boxed Standard Edition, you redeemed a download code to get the game. The upgrade is a separate digital purchase on the same account. Make sure you buy it on the account that redeemed the boxed code.
When is the best time to upgrade?
There is no wrong answer, but each timing has a trade-off:
- In the first few hours: you get the full Ultimate experience as Rockstar intended, with items unlocking naturally through the story. Best if you already suspect you will want it.
- Mid-way through the story: you will have a good sense of how much you use shops and garages. Some earlier Ultimate items may appear all at once.
- After finishing the story: ideal if you plan to keep exploring Leonida, collecting cars and completing side activities long after the credits.
Keep an eye on store sales as well. Edition upgrades are sometimes discounted during seasonal sales on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store, although nothing has been announced for GTA 6, and big new releases are rarely discounted soon after launch.
Regional prices
Rockstar’s $20 figure is the US price difference. In other regions, the upgrade price should broadly match the gap between the local Standard and Ultimate prices, but check your own store before buying.
Upgrade checklist
- Own GTA 6 Standard on the same account
- Choose the upgrade item, not the full Ultimate Edition
- Have enough storage for the add-on download
- Restart the game after installing
