You can preload GTA 6 from November 12, 2026, starting at local midnight, if you have pre-ordered the game. That is exactly one week before the November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Preloading only downloads the files. You still have to wait until release day to play.

What Rockstar has confirmed about preloading
Rockstar set out the preload plan when pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, and its support pages give the start as local midnight on November 12. The idea is simple: spread one of the largest game downloads in history across a whole week instead of having millions of players hit the PlayStation and Xbox servers at the same moment on launch night.
The key word is “local”. In most regions that means the download appears at midnight in your own time zone, so players in Asia and Australia are likely to see it before players in Europe and the Americas. Rockstar’s wording does not fully explain how this works across the different US time zones, so if your download is not available the minute the clock ticks over, give it a little time before assuming something is wrong.
Does preloading give early access?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Preloading puts the game files on your console so it is ready to launch the moment the game unlocks. Nobody gets to play before November 19, whether they bought the Standard Edition or the Ultimate Edition. If you see a social media post offering “early access” to GTA 6, treat it as a scam.
Boxed copies: why the disc is not the whole game
One detail surprised a lot of fans. Rockstar has said boxed copies of GTA 6 contain a download code, and that they will be available from November 12 so physical buyers can preload too. In other words, buying the box still means downloading the game, so your internet connection matters either way.
If you were planning to buy a physical copy to save on data, that plan will not work here. We explain this in more detail in our article on the GTA 6 physical edition.
How big will the GTA 6 download be?
Rockstar has not published an official install size at the time of writing. Some outlets have reported a figure of around 210 GB, but that number has not been confirmed by Rockstar, PlayStation or Xbox, so we would not plan around it as fact. Our piece on GTA 6 file size and storage tracks what is known.
What we can say with confidence is that it will be large. Red Dead Redemption 2 needed well over 100 GB on consoles, and GTA 6 is a bigger, more detailed world. Leaving 250 GB free is a sensible safety margin until the real number appears on the store listing.
How to get ready before November 12
- Pre-order the game. Only pre-orders can preload. If you have not bought it yet, our PS5 pre-order guide covers the steps.
- Free up storage space. Delete games you are not playing or move them to an external drive.
- Turn on automatic downloads. On PS5 and Xbox you can let the console download pre-ordered games in rest mode or standby, so the preload starts without you.
- Check your connection. A wired connection is usually faster and more stable than Wi-Fi for a download this size.
- Update your console. Install any pending system updates before the preload window opens.
Our full step-by-step preload guide shows exactly where these settings are on each console.
Why preloading matters more for GTA 6
Every big launch has a messy first night: store pages loading slowly, downloads crawling, servers struggling. GTA 6 is expected to be bigger than most. GTA 5 is one of the best-selling games of all time, and the GTA 6 trailers broke YouTube viewing records. Getting the files on your console during the quiet days before release is the easiest way to avoid that rush.
It also helps if your internet is slow or capped. A week gives you time to download in smaller sessions, overnight, or when your connection is least busy.
What if you buy GTA 6 after November 12?
That is fine. Anyone who buys during the preload window should be able to start downloading straight away, because the files are already on the store. If you buy on or after November 19, you simply download and play once the install reaches the point where the game can start. Purchases made before November 20 still qualify for the Vintage Vice City Pack.
