How to Preload GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox (Nov 12 Guide)

To preload GTA 6, pre-order the game, make sure you have plenty of free storage, and turn on automatic downloads so your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S starts the download at local midnight on November 12, 2026. Preloading puts the game on your console a week early so you can play the moment it unlocks on November 19. It does not let you play early.

Preload checklist

  • Pre-order completed (digital, or boxed copy redeemed from November 12)
  • At least 250 GB free storage recommended
  • Console system software updated
  • Automatic downloads turned on
  • Console left in rest mode or standby
  • Last checked: November 3, 2026

Step 1: Pre-order GTA 6

Only pre-orders can preload. Follow our step-by-step guides for PS5 or Xbox. If you are buying a boxed copy, it goes on sale on November 12 and contains a download code: redeem the code on your console that day to start the preload.

Step 2: Free up storage

Rockstar has not yet confirmed the GTA 6 file size. Reports suggest around 210 GB, so aim to keep at least 250 GB free to cover the game plus a possible day-one update. Our guide to freeing up space shows how to do this on both consoles.

Step 3: Update your console

PS5: go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install any update.

Xbox: go to Settings > System > Updates and install any console update.

An outdated system can delay the download or block the game from starting on launch day.

Step 4: Turn on automatic downloads

PS5

  1. Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode: turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  2. Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates: turn on Auto-Download.

Xbox Series X|S

  1. Settings > General > Power options: choose Sleep so the console can download in standby.
  2. Settings > System > Updates: turn on Keep my games & apps up to date.

Step 5: Leave your console ready on November 11

Before you go to bed on November 11, put your PS5 into rest mode or your Xbox into standby rather than switching it fully off. When the clock passes midnight in your time zone, the download should start on its own.

Step 6: Check the download is running

PS5: press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads in the control centre.

Xbox: press the Xbox button and go to My games & apps > See all > Manage queue.

If GTA 6 is not there, open the game’s store page and select Download manually.

Step 7: Launch on November 19

When the game unlocks, start it from your home screen. You may need to install a small final update first. Rockstar has not announced the exact unlock time, so keep an eye on official channels in the final days. See the GTA 6 launch day checklist for what to do next.

Download speed tips

  • Use a cable: a wired Ethernet connection is usually faster and more stable than Wi-Fi.
  • Pause other downloads: other games, streaming and phone backups all share your bandwidth.
  • Download at night: home networks and servers are usually quieter.
  • Restart if it stalls: pausing and resuming the download, or restarting the console, often fixes a stuck download.

How long the preload could take

Using the reported (unconfirmed) size of about 210 GB, here is roughly how long the download would take at a steady connection speed. Real speeds are usually lower than your plan’s headline number, especially in a busy launch week.

Connection speed Approximate time for 210 GB
25 Mbps about 19 hours
50 Mbps about 9 to 10 hours
100 Mbps about 4 to 5 hours
300 Mbps about 1.5 hours
1 Gbps about 30 minutes

If your connection is on the slower end, starting as early as possible on November 12 gives you a whole week of buffer.

Start the download while you are away

Both consoles let you manage downloads from your phone. In the PlayStation App or the Xbox app, find GTA 6 in your library and choose to download it to your console. This only works if the console is in rest mode or standby with internet access enabled, so set that up before you leave home.

Preload problems and fixes

Problem Likely fix
No download at midnight Check it is midnight in your time zone, then start it manually
“Not enough space” Delete or move other games
Download very slow Use a cable, pause other downloads, try again later
Game missing from library Check your pre-order in your store purchase history
Boxed code not working Check it is for your console and your account region

Important: preloading and refunds

On PlayStation, starting the download, including a preload, usually ends your right to cancel a pre-order for a refund. If you are still unsure whether to keep your pre-order, decide before November 12 or temporarily turn off automatic downloads.

Preloading on more than one console

If your household has two consoles on the same account, remember that a digital game is tied to your account and console licence rules, not to a single download. Each console downloads its own copy, so preloading on two machines doubles the data used. If your internet is limited, preload on the main console first.
