To pre-order GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S, open the Microsoft Store on your console, search for Grand Theft Auto VI, pick the Standard Edition ($79.99) or Ultimate Edition ($99.99) and select Pre-order. You can also pre-order from the Xbox app on your phone or from the Microsoft Store website. Pre-ordering unlocks the preload from November 12, 2026 and the Vintage Vice City Pack bonus.
What you need
- A Microsoft account signed in on your Xbox Series X or Series S
- A payment method or Microsoft account balance
- Free storage space for the preload, ideally 250 GB or more
Checked November 3, 2026. Store layouts change from time to time, but the steps stay similar.
Method 1: Pre-order on your Xbox
- Open the Store. Press the Xbox button on your controller, go to Store, or select the Store tile on the home screen.
- Search. Select Search and type Grand Theft Auto VI. Choose the official Rockstar Games listing.
- Pick your edition. Choose Standard or Ultimate. Our edition comparison can help.
- Select Pre-order. Review the price and bonuses on the confirmation screen.
- Confirm payment. Choose your payment method and confirm. Microsoft sends a receipt to your account email.
- Check it is listed. Go to My games & apps; the game should appear under pre-orders or ready to install.
Method 2: Xbox app on your phone
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with the same account as your console.
- Search for Grand Theft Auto VI and open the store page.
- Choose your edition and select Pre-order.
- Use Remote install, if available on the listing, so your console starts downloading as soon as the preload opens.
Method 3: Microsoft Store website
Sign in to the Microsoft Store on the web, search for Grand Theft Auto VI, choose your edition and complete the pre-order. The purchase is linked to your Microsoft account, so it will appear on your console automatically.
When will you be charged?
Microsoft explains that if you use money in your Microsoft account balance, you are charged straight away. If you use a card or other payment method, Microsoft may charge you up to 10 days before the release date. With a November 19 launch, that means card payments for GTA 6 may be taken from around November 9. Make sure your card is valid and has funds by then, because Microsoft will cancel a pre-order if it cannot collect payment before launch.
Set up the preload
To let your Xbox download GTA 6 automatically from November 12:
- Go to Settings > General > Power options and choose Sleep (or the power mode that keeps updates running).
- Go to Settings > System > Updates and turn on Keep my games & apps up to date.
- Leave the console in standby the night of November 11.
See our full GTA 6 preload guide for both consoles.
Redeeming a boxed copy on Xbox
If you buy the boxed Standard Edition from a shop, you will find a download code inside, not a disc. Boxed copies are released on November 12 so you can redeem early and preload. To redeem it, open the Store on your Xbox, choose Redeem from the menu and enter the 25-character code. You can also redeem codes on the web at Microsoft’s official redeem page while signed in to the same account. Make sure the code is for Xbox, not PlayStation, and for your account’s region, before you open the box, because opened games are usually hard to return.
What you get for pre-ordering
- The Vintage Vice City Pack with any pre-order or purchase before November 20, 2026.
- One month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders.
- Preload from November 12. No early access.
How to cancel an Xbox pre-order
Microsoft says you can cancel any pre-order online:
- Sign in to your Microsoft account Order history.
- Find the GTA 6 pre-order and select Cancel.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
If you cancel after you have been billed but before release, Microsoft processes it as a refund. If you do not see a cancel option, you may need to use the Xbox refund request form instead.
Is the Xbox Series S a good choice?
GTA 6 is officially available on both Series X and Series S. The main thing to watch on the 512 GB Series S is storage: it has only about 364 GB usable, and GTA 6 is expected to be very large. Read our GTA 6 file size article before you preload.
Is GTA 6 on Game Pass?
No. GTA 6 has not been announced for Xbox Game Pass, so you need to buy it to play.
Troubleshooting
- Pre-order button missing: check that you are signed in and that parental controls are not blocking purchases or mature-rated content.
- Card declined: enable international online payments with your bank, or add funds with an Xbox gift card that matches your account region.
- Game not downloading on November 12: confirm the pre-order in Order history, check storage, and start the install manually from the store page.
